How can Marketers use Big Data?

Gone are the days where Marketers collect information about customer’s activities and getting updates from them manually. Using technology like Big Data algorithms is a more adoptable options today as Marketers these days could no longer create campaigns that are based on their intuition and experience.

Introduction of Social Media

Ever since the introduction of social media, Facebook (2004), Twitter (2007) and Instagram (2010), which allow user’s personal information to be readily available online and the content user’s likes and dislike are available publicly.

How Big Data track patterns?

Big Data has also made it possible to allow marketers to track patterns and trends of human behaviour. The user information are stored digitally which allow marketers to access and analyse information easily since it is based on user customised content in determining which content will be more engaging to them.

An Example of how Instagram use Algorithms:

One good example would be Instagram using algorithm to personalised user account by recommending based on which profile you searched, what post you like, comment and share, and which Instagram stories and IGTV content you love to watch. These information that are collected would appear on your explore page, it would be adjusted accordingly similar to your preference of what you might like or have not already follow.

Similar to search engines, it return different results when you search for a word in different locations, your search results will look differently depending on your account data.

Hence, this personalised result would give marketer access to reach specific audiences and create more effective campaigns in targeting audiences based on the audience interests or buying habits.

My Conclusion:

In today’s world, Big data has gained considerable attention as an effective tool for digital marketers to gain insight into understanding customer preference and meet the different needs of the audience across digital touch points.

However, for marketing traditional methods are more expensive, and now a days, companies are more digitise and they would encourage having online marketing such as use Algorithms to gain insights of consumer patterns. It is much more easier and less time consuming ! So i believe other methods still works wonder , just that depending on how much budget you have to conduct what test!

Yes Big Data really did a good job in analysing the user to provide detailed analysis to ease convenience in consumer! but to answer your question Big data will not be able to track personal information if the user did not post anything personal online. Hence, data would be safe under SG government Data policy ACT protecting our personal information to be kept. If anyone access to it, it will be breaching the Personal Data ACT.

  9. Yes, with big data, I believe can make a difference to a company and can easily gather data that is more important or essential. However, with the big data being so intelligent, would it also have some other risk such as invading privacy? If so, what other measures could you think to overcome this?

  10. These days, Big Data has really greatly changed the way marketers or businesses are operating to get a better understanding with the market trends and customers’ preferences. As a user that uses google frequently to find different products that I’m interested in, I can see how the searches impacted and influenced the advertisements and search results that would be shown on my phone.

However, I think that at times, we might accidentally click on an advertisement, and for the following weeks, or so, we will be constantly receiving the same things. Which can really be annoying and bothersome.

Nonetheless, Big data do help businesses to find their interest group and vice versa. Do you also experience unwanted advertisements?

    Like

    1. Oh talking about unwanted ads , i do face same situation as you! it can be quite annoying sometimes as it happen in a split seconds that I might not even have notice it until i receive notification from it!

Big data on the other hand only share what you have click before and they will assume that that is your preference hence they started suggesting it to you, so whatever you click although might be for fun or for one time purposes, but Big data algorithms remember everything and keep track of the daily patterns and would always share back similar content to you! So be safe and I would advise you to read and press the website slowly so that they could keep track of the right information of you properly and give you only the right content!
